Abstract
Introduction: The appraisal of surgical procedures in a hospital can be done by analysis of data generated from the procedures carried out and services rendered to patients. This study was conducted to determine the relative frequencies of types of operations, age and gender distribution of the patients and indications for surgeries in the urology unit.
Methods: This is a hospital-based, retrospective survey of patients who had urological procedures done between January 2019 and December 2023 at ATBUTH Bauchi. Patients’ data and procedures performed were extracted from the theatre registers and the data analyzed.
Results: There were 709 theatre entries during the period under review, 634 were males (89.5%) and 74 were females (10.5%). The age range was between 6 days and 99 years, with a mean age of 51 years. The procedures for the prostatic diseases (46%), stone diseases (8.4)% and urethral diseases (8%) were the most commonly recorded during the period under review. Prostate biopsy (36.3%) was the most common day case procedure done and cystoscopy for double J stent removal was the most common endourology procedure performed.
Conclusion:
Males accounted for the vast majority of patients operated on, with diseases of the prostate being the most commonly recorded during the period under review. Prostate biopsy was the most commonly performed procedure and urethrocystoscopy was the most common endourology procedure performed. More consultants and residents should be employed and trained in modern endourology procedures to provide high quality urology services to the growing populace.
